Kako se meri ljudska potrošnja energije
Metabolizam je jedna od najmerljivijih stvari o vama, i jedna od najčešće pogrešno opisivanih.

NEAT je mesto gde se nalazi većina stvarne varijacije između osoba — pomeranje, postura, spontano kretanje. To je takođe komponenta koja tiho opada tokom dijete, što je veliki deo onoga što ljudi doživljavaju kao "usporavanje" metabolizma.
Dvaput obeležena voda
Referentna metoda funkcioniše tako što pijete vodu obeleženu stabilnim izotopima vodonika i kiseonika, a zatim pratite njihovo diferencijalno eliminisanje. Razlika između njih odražava proizvodnju ugljen-dioksida, a samim tim i potrošnju energije, tokom jedne do dve nedelje običnog života. To je skupo i neosporno.
Sistematski pregled ukupne potrošnje energije meren na ovaj način kod odraslih daje trenutnu sliku [2], a objedinjene analize su proizvele procene kako mirne, tako i ukupne potrošnje među populacijama [4][5]. Rad sa decom sa hroničnim bolestima pokazuje istu metodologiju primenjenu gde prediktivne jednačine najteže ne uspevaju [1].
Dvaput obeležena voda kao referentna metoda

Meta-analiza je validirala metode procene ishrane u odnosu na dvaput obeleženu vodu [3]. Nalaz je neprijatan i dosledan: ljudi značajno podizveštavaju unos, a podizveštavanje je veće kod osoba sa višom telesnom težinom. To nije namerna prevara — procena porcija je zaista teška, a nijedan dnevnik hrane ne hvata tačno kuhinjsko ulje.
Na strani potrošnje, prediktivne jednačine su sistematski upoređene kod zdravih odraslih i kod sportista, a postoje smernice za najbolje prakse za pravilno merenje mirne metaboličke stope. Sve su to proseci populacije sa individualnim greškama od nekoliko stotina kilokalorija.
Dostupnost energije, ne samo unos
Jedna posebna koncepcija je važna za svakoga ko ozbiljno trenira: dostupnost energije je unos minus potrošnja tokom vežbanja, u odnosu na slobodnu masu. Hronično niska dostupnost potiskuje fiziološku funkciju mnogo pre nego što izgleda kao poremećaj ishrane. Randomizovana studija je pokazala da niska dostupnost energije smanjuje sintezu miofibrilnih i sarkoplazmatskih proteina, a intervencije u obrazovanju o ishrani su testirane kako bi se to rešilo.
San se povezuje sa svim ovim — ograničenje sna je promenilo sastav gubitka težine u randomizovanoj studiji, a produženje sna je promenilo objektivno merenje unosa energije [6]. Više na našoj sajtu o dokazima o snu.
Da li sastav dijete menja potrošnju?
Malo, a veličina efekta je zaista sporna. Istaknuta randomizovana studija je ispitivala potrošnju energije tokom održavanja gubitka težine na dijeti sa niskim sadržajem ugljenih hidrata [7] i prijavila razliku; analiza se od tada široko raspravlja. Iskren rezime je da je svaki efekat mali u odnosu na razliku između onoga što ljudi misle da jedu i onoga što jedu.
