Kako se mjeri ljudska potrošnja energije
Metabolizam je jedna od najmjerljivijih stvari o vama, i jedna od najčešće pogrešno opisivanih.

NEAT je mjesto gdje se nalazi većina stvarne varijacije između osoba — nervozno pomjeranje, postura, spontano kretanje. To je također komponenta koja tiho opada tokom dijete, što je veliki dio onoga što ljudi doživljavaju kao "usporavanje" metabolizma.
Dvaput označena voda
Referentna metoda funkcioniše tako što pijete vodu označenu stabilnim izotopima vodonika i kiseonika, a zatim pratite njihovo diferencijalno izlučivanje. Razlika između njih odražava proizvodnju ugljen-dioksida, a time i potrošnju energije, tokom jedne do dvije sedmice običnog života. To je skupo i neosporno.
Sistematski pregled ukupne potrošnje energije mjeren na ovaj način kod odraslih daje trenutnu sliku [2], a objedinjene analize su proizvele procjene i za bazalnu i ukupnu potrošnju među populacijama [4][5]. Rad sa djecom sa hroničnim bolestima pokazuje istu metodologiju primijenjenu gdje prediktivne jednadžbe najteže ne uspijevaju [1].

Meta-analiza je validirala metode procjene ishrane protiv dvaput označene vode [3]. Nalaz je neugodan i dosljedan: ljudi značajno podcjenjuju unos, a podcjenjivanje je veće kod ljudi sa višom tjelesnom težinom. To nije namjerno obmanjivanje — procjena porcija je zaista teška, a nijedan dnevnik hrane ne hvata tačno ulje za kuhanje.
Na strani potrošnje, prediktivne jednadžbe su sistematski upoređivane kod zdravih odraslih i kod sportista, a postoje smjernice najbolje prakse za pravilno mjerenje bazalnog metabolizma. Sve su to prosječne vrijednosti populacije sa individualnim greškama od nekoliko stotina kilokalorija.
Dostupnost energije, ne samo unos
Jedna posebna koncepcija je važna za svakoga ko ozbiljno trenira: dostupnost energije je unos minus potrošnja tokom vježbanja, u odnosu na bezmasnu tjelesnu masu. Hronično niska dostupnost potiskuje fiziološku funkciju mnogo prije nego što izgleda kao poremećaj u ishrani. Randomizirano ispitivanje je pokazalo da niska dostupnost energije smanjuje sintezu miofibrilarnog i sarkoplazmatskog proteina, a intervencije u obrazovanju o ishrani su testirane kako bi se to riješilo.
San se povezuje sa svime ovim — ograničenje sna je promijenilo sastav gubitka težine u randomiziranom ispitivanju, a produženje sna je promijenilo objektivno mjerenu potrošnju energije [6]. Više na našoj web stranici o dokazima o snu.
Da li sastav dijete mijenja potrošnju?
Malo, a veličina efekta je zaista sporna. Istaknuto randomizirano ispitivanje je ispitivalo potrošnju energije tokom održavanja gubitka težine na dijeti sa niskim udjelom ugljikohidrata [7] i izvijestilo o razlici; analiza se od tada široko raspravlja. Iskren sažetak je da je svaki efekat mali u odnosu na razliku između onoga što ljudi misle da jedu i onoga što jedu.
