NEAT është aty ku ndodhet shumica e variacionit të vërtetë midis individëve — lëvizja, postura, lëvizja spontane. Është gjithashtu komponenti që bie heshtur gjatë një diete, që është një pjesë e madhe e asaj që njerëzit e përjetojnë si "ngadalësim" të metabolizmit të tyre.

Uji i etiketuar dyfish

Metoda referuese funksionon duke ju bërë të pini ujë të etiketuar me izotopë stabilë të hidrogjenit dhe oksigjenit, pastaj duke ndjekur eliminimin e tyre diferencial. Diferenca midis tyre pasqyron prodhimin e dioksidit të karbonit, dhe për pasojë shpenzimin e energjisë, për një deri në dy javë të jetës së zakonshme. Është e shtrenjtë dhe është e padiskutueshme.

Një rishikim sistematik i shpenzimit total të energjisë të matur kështu te të rriturit jep imazhin aktual [2], dhe analizat e grumbulluara kanë prodhuar vlerësime të të dyja shpenzimeve në pushim dhe totale nëpër popullata [4][5]. Puna me fëmijët me sëmundje kronike tregon metodologjinë e njëjtë të aplikuar aty ku ekuacionet parashikuese dështojnë më shumë [1].

Një meta-analizë validoi metodat e vlerësimit të dietës përballë ujit të etiketuar dyfish [3]. Gjetja është e pakëndshme dhe e qëndrueshme: njerëzit nën-raportojnë ndjeshëm marrjen, dhe nën-raportimi është më i madh te njerëzit me peshë më të lartë. Nuk është mashtrim i qëllimshëm — vlerësimi i pjesëve është vërtet i vështirë, dhe asnjë ditar ushqimi nuk kap saktësisht vajin e gatimit.

Në anën e shpenzimit, ekuacionet parashikuese u krahasuan sistematikisht te të rriturit e shëndetshëm dhe te atletët, dhe udhëzime për praktikën më të mirë ekzistojnë për matjen e saktë të normës metabolike në pushim. Të gjitha ato janë mesatare popullore me shenjat e gabimit individual prej disa qindra kilokalorive.

Disponueshmëria e energjisë, jo vetëm marrja

Një koncept i veçantë ka rëndësi për këdo që stërvitet seriozisht: disponueshmëria e energjisë është marrja minus shpenzimi nga aktiviteti fizik, në raport me masën pa yndyrë. Disponueshmëria kronikisht e ulët shtyp funksionin fiziologjik shumë para se të duket si një çrregullim të ngrënies. Një provë e randomizuar zbuloi se disponueshmëria e ulët e energjisë reduktonte sintezën e proteinave miofibrilare dhe sarkoplasmike, dhe janë provuar ndërhyrje për edukimin në ushqim për ta adresuar atë.

Gjumë ndërvepron me të gjitha këto — kufizimi i gjumit ndryshoi përbërjen e humbjes së peshës në një provë të randomizuar, dhe zgjatja e gjumit ndryshoi marrjen e energjisë të matur objektivisht [6]. Më shumë në faqen tonë të provave për gjumin.

A ndryshon përbërja e dietës shpenzimin?
