Braunes Fett ist wirklich faszinierende Physiologie und ein tatsächlich kleiner Beitrag dazu, wie viel Energie Sie verbrennen.
Was braunes Fett tut
Braunes Fettgewebe ist reich an Mitochondrien, die UCP1 exprimieren, ein Protein, das die Atmungskette von der ATP-Produktion entkoppelt. Die Energie, die chemisch erfasst worden wäre, wird stattdessen als Wärme freigesetzt. Es ist eine absichtliche Ineffizienz, und ihr evolutionärer Zweck besteht darin, kleine Säugetiere und menschliche Säuglinge warm zu halten.
Erwachsene wurden lange Zeit als verlierend angesehen. Bildgebende Verfahren zeigten das Gegenteil, und eine Metaanalyse hat seitdem die Prävalenz und die damit verbundenen Faktoren quantifiziert [3]. Eine translationale Überprüfung behandelt das größere Bild [7].
Was es aktiviert
Kälte, hauptsächlich. Eine systematische Überprüfung der gewohnheitsmäßigen Kälteexposition ergab, dass sie die Aktivität des braunen Fettgewebes bei Menschen erhöht [1]. Die Auswirkungen von Bewegung auf die UCP1-Expression wurden metaanalysiert [5], mit weniger beeindruckenden Ergebnissen als die "Bräunungs"-Begeisterung vermuten lässt. Diätetische Interventionen wurden systematisch überprüft [4] und die Effekte sind klein.
Ein Befund verdient besondere Beachtung, weil er viele Protokollempfehlungen untergräbt: Die kälteinduzierte Thermogenese variiert im Tagesverlauf [6]. Ein Eisbad um 6am und eines um 6pm sind kein identischer Reiz, was bedeutet, dass die meisten veröffentlichten Protokolle eine relevante Variable nicht kontrollieren.
Kälteexposition aktiviert braunes Fett
Das arithmetische Problem
Hier ist der Grund, warum dies kein Gewichtsverlust-Intervention wird. Selbst großzügige Schätzungen des maximal aktivierten braunen Fetts bei Erwachsenen setzen seinen Beitrag auf wenige Dutzend Kilokalorien pro Tag — in der Größenordnung eines Kekses. Um das zu erreichen, ist eine anhaltende Kälteunbehaglichkeit erforderlich, und die zitternde Thermogenese in gewöhnlichem Muskel trägt mehr dazu bei als braunes Fett bei den beteiligten Temperaturen.
Messungseinschränkungen
Die meisten Quantifizierungen von braunem Fett verwenden PET-CT mit einem radioaktiven Glukosetracer, der die Glukoseaufnahme misst, anstatt die Wärmeproduktion und eine Strahlenexposition umfasst, die die Wiederholungsmessung einschränkt. Infrarot-Thermographie wurde als Alternative vorgeschlagen und systematisch überprüft [2], mit gemischten Schlussfolgerungen zur Validität. Diese methodologische Schwierigkeit ist ein großer Teil des Grundes, warum das Feld sich langsam bewegt.
